This Is an Actual Contract

This Splits Sheet will save your butt if there is ever a dispute over who actually wrote the song!  Don't let memory fade on your hard earned percentages. Plus, downloading this contract is 100% free.

How To Use This Contract:

1) Print out this contract and have it on hand at every songwriting session (even if you are in a band).

2) Date the contract at the top of the page.

3) Agree on a Composition Title/Song Name.

4) Record the writers' names in Column One, their PRO affiliation in Column Two, and their CAE/IPI# in Column Three.

5) Agree on how you will split the credit BEFORE writing:

—If You Are In A Band: All band members should receive an equal share. If a band member brings a partially written song to practice, it is common they will receive 10% more than the other writers.

—LA Style Splits:  If you want to determine splits "LA Style" you may count lines of lyrics written and determine the percentage mathematically. It is common that the writer responsible for the chorus will receive 10% more than the other writers.

—Nashville Style Splits: This is my preferred method of splits, it treats all writers as equals. Every writer in the room will receive an equal division of the writing credit regardless of contribution. Even if a writer only contributes a few lines, it is arguable that the song would not be the same without that writer. If you feel that a writer won't pull their weight, then tell them to leave the room. Professional songwriters only!

6) Write the song, be creative, and have a fun time.

7) When the song is complete and you are just making your final tweaks, record the actual contribution of each writer in Column Four using one of the above methods. Write out your splits where the total division equals 100%.

8) Have all writers sign their signature at the bottom indicating that they agree with the percentage recorded as their contribution.

Optional: Once you register the song with your PRO, write down the Work # and the ISWC # for future reference.

Don't wait until there is a dispute, ink your splits now!
